Amazon.co.uk Review
A series that’s as much about one as the other, the wonderfully funny, touching and utterly genuine Sex and the City dares to portray real adults in a thoroughly realistic environment. Filmed in and around the streets of Manhattan, the show brings New York life–and specifically singles life–alive as no other has done before. Like its HBO stablemate The Sopranos, this is TV for grown-ups: frank and non-patronising, dizzyingly well written and devastatingly accurate in its characterisations. Sarah Jessica Parker plays Carrie Bradshaw, Manhattan’s “sexual anthropologist” whose weekly newspaper column gives the series its title. Kristen Davis, Kim Cattrall and Cynthia Nixon are her acerbic, cynical, thirtysomething singleton pals: gossip, sex, men, shoes, shopping, sex, designer clothes, fashion and sex dominate their affluent yet incomprehensibly empty lifestyles as they move from swanky restaurant opening to night club to art exhibition in the relentless pursuit of fulfilment and validation. Conspicuously, the men in their lives–from “toxic bachelors” to “modelisers” and beyond–fail to provide either, leaving the women to pick up the pieces after each shattered relationship. Adapted from Candace Bushnell’s bestseller, in the first season Carrie embarks on her long and tortuous liaison with “Mr Big” and watches wryly as her pals seek solace with various members of the male sex, electric appliances and even, disastrously yet briefly, celibacy.
On the DVD: Fortunately, 12 outstanding episodes are their own selling point here, since the presentation of these two discs leaves something to be desired. Although Region 2 encoded, inexcusably the broadcast format is American NTSC not PAL, so if you don’t have a reasonably modern TV you’ll have trouble playing the discs in the first place; there’s a tiny promo feature and teaser trailers, plus cast biographies and synopses that pop up at the beginning of every episode. The interface lacks a “Play All” facility, forcing you to skip back and forth from the main menu after each episode. Add to that some pretty nasty packaging and this set won’t win any prizes for presentation. But the shows themselves are a constant delight: anyone who’s ever dated or been dumped should own this set. –Mark Walker

The hip, chic and sassy wise cracking mega babes of the metropolis that is, Manhatten, take us on a journey through the battlefield that is SEX! Managing to overcome diabloical and outrageous sexual encounters with the opposite sex, the four sexy girls manage to pull in the laughs from female and male counterparts alike…At times sentimental and encouraging, it brings home a lesson to us all…sex, be it in a city, is fun!!

I gave the first episode and the second a chance. No laughs. By three and four I was fast forwarding through them. By five I was ejecting the disk. By six I was selling it on ebay.

Hmm, a show about a gang of easywomen (who seem to think of themselves as ‘liberated’) who can’t keep a man ~ why can’t they keep a man? Because they are emotionally crippled.
I was given this as a gift, watched it once then ebayed it.
It’s cheap, low-rent & devoid of entertainment value!
American comedy has gone downhill, from Fraser to this? HOW?

Personnaly i think that series one of sex in the city is the least intresting and the most tiresome, as its main issue is sex and sometimes it does feel as if that is the only thing that its about, Maybe thats what the writers intended the whole of Sex in the City to be like but we have seen so much raw emotion and beautiful scenes in later seasons that it just feels like a bit of a waste. Compaired again to later seasons number 1 really doesn’t have the sheer style, there arnt the beautiful apartments or the great shots of New York in the snow (which i think makes Sex In The City one cut above most of the other serieses except Ally McBeal)Personally i think one of the main flaws in this season is Samantha she has always been one of my faviourite charecters but she seems all to predictable and way more two dimensional than she usually is, shes always very contriversial but she shows no real emotion or care for anybody elses like normal. The photography isnt up to much really ever i dont think, It feels like every episode they have had to scimp and save budget wise which is a shame as you really dont get the whole of the atmosphere of what Sex In The City is all about. But please dont let my review put you off this season it still is brilliant there are many inspired scenes (just further apart than later seasons) for example one of the best episodes on this box set is The Land Off The Twenty Somethings, this episode sees Carrie becoming nostalgic for her youth but will going to bed with a twenty year old make her feel better or will it just bring another big dillema to her life. Also all of the charecter except from Samatha are very well introduced and you do get an instant feel for their personalities and what kind of reactions that they would each have from diffrent situations. still though by far my faviourite part of this season (like all the others) is Carrie’s newspaper article. It is a great way to end a episode and it often makes you think way more than the actual episode would ever make you. It’s in these endings that you really learn about Carries charecter the little weakness in her thoughts, you learn her vunrability, anger, love, hate and most of all you learn about what the world should be about, it should be about love and relationships. Is Sex in the City the best series on television? Maybe, well it’s up high with the best of them.
This season is a real rough dimond with a bit of a higher budget and more care for peoples emotions from the writers and this season could have easily been as memorable as the brilliant Season 2, Season 3, Season 4, Season5 and the truly inspiring Seaqson 6, all the charecters have been through so much in 6 years thats it’s always nice to go back to when our faviourite group of friends were more humble and were more eager to please people. Just Imaqgine no big no Alexander No Elizabeth Taylor, Charlotte was unaware of her inferdelity and samantha didnt have Jerad or her Cancer.

The first season of “Sex and the City” is full of great moments. It’s a true must-have for any fan of the show because it introduces each of the characters, and sets up thier various storylines in a way not seen in later seasons. It’s also really interesting to see how the programme has changed from this first season to the last. I also found that alot of the episodes were brand new to me because this season is so rarely broadcast on television.
The problem with this DVD Boxset is that the video quality isn’t what it should be. The video has been ported directly from it’s original American NTSC format and unfortunatley it has a very grainy quality to it. This is the only real problem with the DVD boxset and it’s a shame that the publishers did not make more of an effort to fix these quality problems. There are some nice special features including a very interesting behind-the-scenes featurette, but the video quality issues are a problem you can’t escape. Apart from that, this is a must have for any “Sex and the City” fan – just be prepared for dissapointing video quality.
